Automatic Winding Flyback Chronograph Roberto Mancini

During a football match, both the halves, the extra time and the stoppage time are all nerve-wracking periods for a manager. Tactics are decided according to the match time remaining, and strategies can lead to either victory or defeat.
The brand was looking to make an ultra-technical instrument that could assist a manager not only during matches, but during extra time, when the remaining minutes are no longer displayed to the players, or their manager.

Roberto Mancini

The former footballer Roberto Mancini has an impressive list of titles to his credit. As a player, he won the Italian championships six times, was voted Player of the Year in the Italian league twice, was twice part of the winning European Cup Winners’ Cup team and also lifted the UEFA Super Cup. Given this exceptional career, it was only natural for Roberto Mancini to turn manager and, in 2009, he took the mighty Manchester City team under his wing, guiding them to victory in this year’s Premier League. Today, Roberto Mancini is the new head coach of Italy. His personality won Richard Mille over immediately: an unrivalled tactician, he shines with his inventiveness and elegance on the pitch. BASEPLATE AND BRIDGES MADE OF GRADE 5 TITANIUM

The baseplate and the bridges are crafted of grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible, highly corrosion-resistant and remarkably rigid alloy, which enables the gear train to function effortlessly. The alloy is 90% grade 5 titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium. This combination further increases the material’s mechanical properties, which explains its frequent use in the aerospace, aeronautical and automobile industries. The baseplate of the calibre RMAC1 has been optimised to for an extremely low weight / resistance ratio.

The skeletonised baseplate and the bridges were subjected to intensive and complete validation tests to optimise their resistance capacities.

FLYBACK CHRONOGRAPH

The flyback chronograph dial displays match time on the basis of two 45-minute halves, and up to 15 minutes of stoppage time. Pressing the pusher at 4 o’clock once actuates the flyback function and repositions the hand at 12 o’clock, ready to start the second half. If extra time is awarded, the flyback function can be reactivated so that the watch shows the 15 minutes of extra match time and up to 5 minutes of stoppage time.

OVERSIZE DATE AND MONTH DISPLAYS

The semi-instantaneous date is placed in a red horizontal aperture below 12 o’clock with automatic adjustment for months of 30 or 31 days. the semi-instantaneous month indicator with Arabic numerals is placed between 4 and 5 o’clock.

This exclusive Richard Mille design makes it possible to effectively adapt rewinding of the mainspring to the user’s activity level, in sporting or non-sporting environments. By adjusting the six-position rib, the rotor’s inertia is modified to either speed up the winding process in the case of leisurely arm movements, or to slow it down during sporting activities.

MOVEMENT CHARACTERISTICS

CASE

The distinctive Richard Mille tonneau-shaped case, with its ergonomically fitting curves and dramatic arcs requires many hours of preparation before the actual milling procedures can begin. The tripartite case entails some 86 preliminary stamping and striking operations to ready the case parts for cutting and milling. The actual machining process is preceded by some 50 hours of machine setup and programming before all systems can proceed with the more than 300 separate operations that need to be executed. State-of-the-art CNC 5-axis machines with an accuracy to a few microns are a necessity for creating the multiple curves and arcs featured in Richard Mille’s case design aesthetic.

The satin-finished tripartite case of the RM 11-01 is water resistant to 50 metres, ensured by two Nitrile O-ring seals. The case is assembled with 20 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion-resistant washers in 316L stainless steel.

DOUBLE-BARREL SYSTEM

The double-barrel system contributes to torque stability over a longer period. This is achieved by using higher rotations of the barrel, thereby reducing pressure and wear on the teeth, bearings and pivots, improving long-term performance.

FREE-SPRUNG BALANCE WITH VARIABLE INERTIA

This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shocks and during movement assembly or disassembly, hence better chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated, and a more accurate and repeatable calibration is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance.

SPLINE SCREWS IN GRADE 5 TITANIUM FOR THE BRIDGES AND CASE

This permits better control of the torque applied to screws during assembly. These screws are unaffected by physical manipulation during assembly or disassembly and age well.
